What We Do

The Results-based Leadership Consortium is a group of practitioners who help leaders obtain effective and lasting results using new leadership practices.

It takes new ways of seeing and thinking about problems to generate new practices. For leadership, one of the breakthroughs was the recognition that problems are not all the same. Setting up a new IT system, for example, will probably create a lot of headaches, but most are going to be caused by technical problems and you can solve these using traditional analytical tools, by gathering data about the problem and analyzing it.

Not so if your goal is a successful merger or health-care reform. A successful outcome here requires an entirely different approach. It's culture (habits and beliefs) as well as people's attitudes and values that make the problems of leadership complex. When a project or initiative fails, it is often because, though they may not even know it, participants or stakeholders aren't on the same page. They have different interests, perspectives, or values, don't see eye to eye, or are pursuing their own agendas and not paying much attention to what others are doing. Sometimes one set of stakeholders doesn't even know who the others are, let alone what they want

To get good results, all the major players (stakeholders or participants) need to be aligned. When they're aligned you can avoid breakdowns or get a project back on track when things have gone wrong. Getting people aligned is a key element of leadership and this takes adaptive work: dealing with culture, relationships, and people's attitudes, values, and beliefs.

On the website of the Results-based Leadership Consortium you'll find ideas and tools to guide you to new practices: tools to help you do the adaptive work of leading to get good results from your assignments, projects, and other initiatives; tools and concepts to lead and create the space for authentic conversations necessary to achieve results, tools for networking, learning, sharing knowledge, fostering collaborative work practices and for moving from ideas to action. You will also be able to read and contribute to the reflections and stories of practitioners' and leaders' experiences.
